課程概述

This seminar aims at discussing the tension between relationality and negativity through comparing affect studies and queer studies. Affect studies usually conceptualize affect as the bodily capacity and its variation occurs through the ongoing interactions with other entities. In this sense, the ideas of affect replace the clear-cut self/other relationship with the shared ontological relationality in which all the participants experience the ongoing transformation by affecting and being affected. On the other hand, many queer studies focus on the negativity which, for many, is integral to the queer existing conditions. Queer negativity then bespeaks the antagonism between the social and the queer subjects. In this sense, the tension emerges between ideas of affect and of (queer) negativity. This seminar discusses this tension between the idea of ontological relationality and negativity and seeks to develop a possible negotiation between these two. The seminar will begin with the general introduction of affect studies. We will proceed to examine how Deleuze and Deleuzian scholars continue Spinoza’s account to conceptualize affects as the forces that propel becomings and relationality. Then, the focus will shift to queer studies by attending the discussion of queer negativity. Near the end of the seminar, we will pay particular attention to Lauren Berlant’s works which emphasize the negotiation between negative feelings and social relationality.

課程目標
This seminar aims to introduce students to the concepts of affect and queer negativity. Students are expected to develop a critical understanding of each field and integrate these discussions into their researches.
